Update from ICOBA Europe

This is an update from your association concerning how our events planned for this year are being affected by the evolving worldwide situation with the COVID-19 infection. This update informs you of decisions that were reached by your executive committee team at its scheduled meeting last Saturday 14th March 2020 concerning our annual general meeting and our biennial family retreat.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

You will obviously be aware that our AGM traditionally takes place in the West Midlands in the second weekend of May each year following a resolution at our founders’ day service. This year’s AGM was therefore fixed for 9th May 2020 in Birmingham and as this happened to fall on a bank holiday weekend we had planned to invite you to spend the weekend in the West Midlands with your family. We have now unfortunately had to cancel this date for the AGM and we will be looking to reschedule the AGM for a date in late summer this year.

Family retreat 2020

This year’s family retreat was scheduled to occur as usual in the last weekend in July. You may be aware that we had planned to have
our retreat this year on the mainland of Continental Europe and had actually identified a resort in the Algarve in Portugal that would have been perfect especially as we were looking to offer yourselves and your families the option to extend beyond the traditional 2-3 nights and turn it into a family summer break. As things evolved we moved away from looking at Portugal and located an ideal facility in Nottingham that again offered the option of a 2 or 3 night stay at very reasonable costs.

With the establishment of the COVID-19 pandemic and the evolving plans of the UK government and public health advice we have sadly had to take the decision to cancel this year’s family retreat. Even if this pandemic abates in the UK it is not likely to do so (according to UK government briefing and projections) for another 3 months. As it will be irresponsible to financially commit to planning a retreat before the pandemic abates, it appears very unlikely that we will be able to have the retreat before the end of summer. Our retreat is essentially planned as a summer break and so the regrettable decision is that there will not be an ICOBA Europe family retreat this year. The good news is that we can look forward to one in 2 years’ time and probably have a break in Europe then.

Whatever you do over the coming months please stay safe and let’s look out for one another.

Kind regards,

Deji Okubadejo
Chairman, ICOBA Europe

ICOBA Europe wins at Methodist Girls High School Old Girls Association (UK/Ireland Branch) ‘Lit Day’

At this much anticipated event and given the close relationship with the host school, the team was under pressure to deliver in the various competitions on the day. We were represented by Jonathan Odugbemi who lived up to his reputation as an excellent debater while at Igbobi. Jonathan presented his very persuasive arguments with great style and aplomb and we won the debating competition convincingly. The school also won the Fashion Parade with Kunle Adeniji, Tolu Soyomokun leading the way. They were ably supported by Segun Ifaturoti and Seye Oyediran.

Overall, we demonstrated a combination of serious academic rigour, eloquence, style and chic in both competitions.

Schools attending the event were required to turn up in uniform and some were rather disappointed we didn’t dress up in khaki shirts and shorts until we explained/reminded them that we only ever attended Lit Days in our Sunday whites. It was nostalgic to see very familiar school uniforms — Methodist Girls High School, Our Lady of Apostles, Reagan Memorial, CMS Grammar Shcool and Methodist Boys High School. The various waistlines though may have changed somewhat 🙂

You can view pictures from the day here.

Have you booked your place at the Dr Olumide Awe Memorial Lecture/Bi-Annual Dinner & Dance?

This is a reminder that on Saturday, 11 November 2017 we will be holding our Bi-Annual Dinner & Dance which promises to be great fun and an opportunity to meet old friends and new alike. The event will be a celebration of our alma mater and good food, drink, music and festivity will be provided.

As we rejoice at the reunion of old friends, we will remember one of our dearest departed, Dr Olumide Awe, a former Chairman of the Igbobi College Old Boys Association Europe Branch. We will be holding the first ever Dr Olumide Awe Memorial Lecture to honour his memory and make a contribution to intellectual discourse on subjects close to our community. We have therefore invited Dr Dele Olajide, who is a distinguished mental health practitioner, as our inaugural speaker to talk about the stigma of mental health amongst black Africans. It promises to be very informative and educational.

Tickets can be purchased here.

ICOBA Europe at Royal Ascot 2017 Report

This proved to be a truly wonderful experience for those that attended. Dressed in ICOBA themed finery, the majority of those in the group met up at Waterloo Station where they boarded the train to Ascot. The journey itself was most enjoyable with the sparkling wine (and non-alcholic beverages) and nibbles consumed on the train setting up what was to be an excellent afternoon.

Located in the Queen Anne Enclosure, the party was sufficiently close to the great and the good of British society and particulary enjoyed the ride past of Her Majesty and the rest of the Royal Procession. The horses whizzing past every now and then added to the excitement and the group managed to about break even on the group bets placed.

The day ended with a communal sing-a-long around the bandstand led by the Royal Welsh Guards.

Golfing Clinic – 28 May 2016

GolfDayMay2016 (53 of 17)

The Golfing Clinic was a hugh success with all available places being taken up. The morning started a bit wet but soon dried out. All aspiring golfers were initially placed on the putting green and were instructed by one of the club’s pros. Those who were more experienced golfers were taken away to the driving range by the senior club pro. All the others later joined them on the range and took turns in hitting the ball with various levels of success. It was great fun and after the clinic was over we retired to the club house where a wonderful buffet was provided. Many thanks to Kunle Adeniji who organised the event.
